Ms. Huston graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas State University in 2000 with a Bachelors of Music in Music Education and earned a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from Lamar University in 2015. She is beginning her twentieth year as Director of the NSMS Choirs. Ms. Huston is the Fine Arts Department Chair at NSMS and the Region XXXIII JH Choir Organizer. In 2007, she was named NSMS Teacher of the Month by student vote. In 2008, she was honored as a North Channel Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Month. In 2015, she was named a semi-finalist in the HEB Excellence in Education. She has presented sessions at TMEA and TCDA conventions. Ms. Huston is a frequent clinician and adjudicator, and is a member of TMEA, TCDA, TMAC, and TMAA. During the summer, Ms. Huston is on faculty with the AFA Summer Music Conservatory.
Miles Ward holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance, a Master’s Degree in Choral Music Education, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University. He is beginning his 7th year of teaching, and his first at North Shore Middle School. He spent four years teaching at Chapel Hill Independent School District where he lead the choirs to their first Sweepstakes trophy in the school’s history, and two years at Pasadena High School where he helped lead the choirs to their first Sweepstakes trophy in nine years. He is very excited to be a part of the NSMS team!
Ms. Jackson graduated Cum Laude from Texas State University in 2017 with a Bachelors of Music in Music Studies with All-Level Teacher Certification. She is beginning her third year as a Director of the North Shore Middle School Choirs, where her choirs have won the UIL Sweepstakes award. In 2016, she was chosen to represent Texas State University as a student conductor at the Texas Choral Directors Association. Ms. Jackson is a member of TMEA and TCDA.
Of the eight choirs in the NSMS Mustang Choir Department, six are UIL Competition Choirs. The University Interscholastic League sponsors a contest for choral groups. The contest is judged in two parts: a prepared concert and a sight-reading selection. The panel of three judges in each section rate the group on a scale of I-V, I being the best. Groups who score straight I (Superior) ratings are said to have won a SWEEPSTAKES.
The NSMS Mustang Choir Department is made up of seven different choirs: four treble groups and three tenor/bass groups.
